Everyone is born with emotions; learning to process and regulate those emotions is not pre-wired into our brain. Children learn about new emotions as they mature. Emotional, social and cultural contexts all affect how we process our emotional reactions. Teaching children to identify and process their emotions by providing a framework that helps explain how they feel is crucial. This makes it easier for them to deal with those emotions in a way that is conducive to the learning environment at school.

At CISB, in elementary, we use the Responsive Classroom Approach, which is an approach to creating safe, enjoyable, engaging classrooms and school communities. Teaching emotional regulation strategies is an essential feature of that. It is important that each individual feels that they belong to the community.
