2022 Canada-China Biodiversity Photo Exhibition &Youth Photography Competition

Protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity are key priorities for both Canada and China.

With China hosting the United Nations Biodiversity Conference known as COP15 in Kunming, the Embassy of Canada to China and the Canadian International School in Beijing, along with the AKD International Education school network, co-organized this first ever Canada-China Biodiversity Photo Exhibition & Youth Photography Exhibition.

This initiative aims to encourage everyone to learn about biodiversity through the lens of photography and to motivate all of us – students, parents, and leaders – to take the time to appreciate and protect our natural environment.

Over 160 students from seven schools across China participated in the Youth Photography Competition. Their works, along with professional photos from Canadian Geographic Magazine Michelle Valberg and Jean-Simon Bégin and Chinese wildlife photographer Mr. Xi Zhinong will be exhibited in Beijing, Hefei, Kunming, Fuzhou, Shenzhen from April 18 to May 27 2022.

This picture shows different species of fishes living together. Biodiversity is the coexistence of a large number of organisms that maintain the balance of an ecological environment, and this picture explains very well what multiple species of animals living together in one ecosystem and forming a biodiversity means. In particular, notice the nurse shark in the lower middle of the image, they are one of the most dangerous predators in their ecosystem that they form. Variations within species represent an important but often overlooked aspect of biodiversity. My photograph shows the leaves of what I believe is a photinia fraseri shrub, found in my school’s courtyard. Like a seasonal cycle, from green to red and back, through the beautiful variety of colours in the leaves, I’ve tried to suggest that intraspecific variation is an essential component of our natural biodiversity, adds beauty in our lives, it is something to be desired and it should be actively supported. We are all beautiful together.

Alchemy is a diction to the question of which animal this is. It’s unclear, and there shouldn’t be an answer. The best representative for biodiversity is an alchemy of all animals combined. A juxtaposition is used to give this piece a stylistic shock to its audiences. The realistic yet fictional feel to this photo is used to symbolize the lack of natural life in Beijing the lack of biodiversity. The celebration for the end of all living life is shown by the grave type vibe and the once glorious animals are nothing but show to the future generations

This photograph was taken at sunset in the suburbs of Beijing. It contains stripped trees that are casually swaying back and forth, dancing to the howls of the wind. The picture itself is slightly blurry, specifically done to create a sense of movement. This picture highlights the theme of biodiversity because the subject of it is nature and life. It displays the withering of the trees and the welcoming of a new season in the city. Something I am very proud of is that it has a magnificent colour flow. Nature allowed me to capture a photo that goes from dark to light which made it aesthetically pleasing and lively.

This is a picture of a newly bloomed rose in my grandmother’s backyard. Due to the fact that this backyard was where I spent all my summers, I have quite a strong connection to all the flowers and roses planted here. This rose specifically caught my eye because of its vibrant colours and petal shape. Most importantly, this rose was the only rose in many bushes (can be noticed in the background). This made me believe that it might have been the first to bloom to welcome the new season of spring.

This image is a reminder of biology class and learning photosynthesis, and science fair and classmates science fair projects. The beauty of the image is that the tree continues to grow outwards and upwards in order to bring itself as much light as possible, while still growing. It’s an image that can also be a lot more significant as a story with more of a deeper meaning. It could be a metaphor of positivity, the light, and negativity, the darkness, or even coming out of a dark space stronger and better than before. Either way, this tree still started as a shrub, and look at what it has become.

Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate in recent years according to a 2019 UN report. Re-interpreting a “Vanitas” theme, my photograph is meant as a warning on the consequences of neglecting the constant biodiversity loss due to destructive human activities, and a reminder of our impact on the natural environment delicate balance. In addition to the creatures we often see around, there are also very small creatures that are hard to see. Except for trees, flowers, various creatures, small insects such as ladybugs, ants, earthworms are always living around us and even if we can’t perceive them, we shouldn’t ignore them. Each particular species in the environment is like a cogwheel in a machine. Everything comes together to create an ecosystem. The more diverse species are, the more stable they become to respond to more situations. Do not ignore biodiversity in all its sizes and always pay attention to it.

This is a picture that shows a group of one jellyfish species, which is called as Rhopilema Esculentum. This jellyfish species lives in the Pacific Ocean, in the warm temperature of the water. It contains a rigid and thick bell and eight branched oral arms underneath the bell. Likely to the other members of Rhizostomae, an order of jellyfish, it does not have the tentacles at the edge of the bell. Jellyfish play an important role in the marine ecosystem and food chain since they are carnivorous animals; prey on other marine organisms.

Here is a picture of a Pacific Sea Nettle, a type of jellyfish. As seen, it has characteristics of round bells, long oral arms and tentacles. Through those features, Pacific Sea Nettles contribute to balancing biodiversity in ecosystems. Jellyfish are carnivorous, meaning they eat other animals, namely zooplankton, worms, or fish eggs. Their main hunting method is to use the tentacles with stinging cells for reflective paralyzation on the preys and drag them with oral arms into the digestive systems. By being important predators in the food chain, they regulate and ensure appropriate prey population and species diversity between ecosystems.

The jellyfish affect biodiversity because they are a part of food chain, it eats crustaceans, and small fish, also there are a lot of other creature that eat jellyfish。 For example, sea turtles, sharks, and tuna fish. without them some of the species will be endanger. Jellyfish also play an important role in the oceanic food chain and the ecosystem. Jellyfish are carnivorous and feed mostly on plankton, comb jellies and other jellyfish. Large species of jellyfish feed on large crustaceans and other marine organisms. In turn, sea turtles, sunfish and spade fish prey upon jellyfish.

Biodiversity occurs to all the creatures and varieties found on earth. Biodiversity is related to sea turtles because they are one part of the ecosystem; it is one variety that lives on Earth. Sea turtle is very important to the biodiversity in the ocean and the health ecosystem also. Sea turtles help the coral, and the reefs under the sea stay healthy by providing critical habitats for other marine life. Sea turtle is also essential because it keeps the ecosystem balanced. Fishes prey on sea turtles and prey on other fishes.

Many aquariums are now seeking to breed marine organisms so that they could safely grow up, and then send them back to their original habitats so that the natural population would not decline. Thus, preparing these fish with increasing the biodiversity of their tank could be essential for the specie’s survival in the future.

Jellyfish affect the food web by capturing plankton that the fish would have eaten and converting that food energy into gelatinous biomass. limits the transfer of energy into the food chain as jellyfish are not readily consumed by other predators. Jellyfish are becoming one of the dominant organisms in coastal waters. Overfishing allows jellyfish to occupy crevices once filled by other species. Human impacts cause many problems for marine ecosystems, including loss of essential habitats and loss of biodiversity.

Human influence leads to many issues in the ocean ecosystem and environment that have an enormous impact on marine biodiversity. The most serious of which are; decreased biodiversity and the loss of essential habitat.
Climate change and global warming are affecting jellyfish and their proliferation is being favored by water pollution, rising temperatures in specific areas, and maritime traffic. Jellyfish are becoming one of the most dominant species in the oceans and coastal sea due to human activities. Furthermore, overfishing (caused by human activities) allows jellyfish to occupy the niche that was previously occupied by other species.

This picture shows fish swimming at Hefei aquarium. Fish host 80 percent of the planet’s biodiversity, not forgetting the fact that they are the largest ecosystem on earth. Fish provide 20% of animal protein about 3 billion people. In addition to the change in fish species range, invasive species and extinction, decreasing fish body size and reduced impact of fish stock recruitment (amount of young fish produced each year) are changes that are witnessed when sea temperature rises.

The fennec fox is a common species in the Sahara Desert. The only recorded degradation of its population comes from the Sahara region of Morocco. In addition, fennec foxes are still commonly hunted and sold in North Africa. Fennec foxes are hunted commercially in North Africa, either for the pet trade, or to sell their meat to local people for consumption, or to make their fur into clothing. They are also killed by domestic dogs. Such threats have led to the decline of certain fennec fox populations in northwest Africa. In southern Morocco, for example, the construction of permanent human settlements has led to the disappearance of the fenicle fox
