Week Without Walls offers our students a chance to learn and grow outside the classroom, providing unique and valuable experiences beyond traditional academic learning. These trips enhance language skills, expose students to potential career and academic opportunities, and they help foster a sense of personal responsibility. We are excited to share these journeys of our Grade 6 to Grade 11 students.
Grade 6 Week Without Walls-Thousand Island Lake Adventure
“千岛湖 (Qiandaohu),” directly translated as “Thousand Island Lake,” is an authentic water town, attracting outdoor and water sports enthusiasts from all over.
It was an exciting and educational experience for the students!
户外课堂周为我们的学生提供了在课堂外学习和成长的机会，提供了超越传统学术学习的独特而宝贵的经验。 这些旅行提高了语言技能，让学生接触到潜在的职业和学术机会，并有助于培养个人责任感。 我们很高兴与大家分享我们六年级至十一年级学生的这些旅程。
During the Water, Earth, Culture Day, Grade 6 students had the opportunity to connect with the lake and learn about its significance to the local people and the region. This is an important aspect of cultural understanding and appreciation.
On the trip, numerous fun activities like kayaking and island hopping provided a thrilling and memorable experience for our students. These activities allow the students to enjoy the lake’s natural beauty and improve their teamwork and communication skills.
Grade 6 also participated in a Tea Culture experience, a valuable learning opportunity for the students to learn about Chinese culture and history. In addition, learning how to make tea is also a great practical skill for students to acquire.
The Adventure Day, which included a cycle ride and mountain-top views, was a thrilling and challenging experience for the students. It’s great that they had the opportunity to continue their relationship with Thousand Island Lake and appreciate its natural beauty in different ways.
Finally, the Adventure Park activities, such as Via Ferrata and Caves, provided a unique and exciting experience for the students to challenge themselves. The closing campfire under the stars was a memorable and bonding experience for the students.
The Grade 6 Week Without Walls – Thousand Island Lake Adventure helped the students develop their outdoor and cultural understanding and build important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. It’s a valuable and unforgettable experience for the students that they will cherish for years.
Grade 7 Week Without Walls – Ancient Village Culture Hui-style Aesthetics Service Learning
Huizhou, originating in modern-day Huangshan City, Anhui Province, is home to one of the three regional cultures of Chinese history. This destination retains substantial Hui-style intangible cultural heritage and Hui-style architectural beauty that has stood the test of time.
The trip provided Grade 7 students with a chance to understand the cultural and historical value of emblems and to explore the production and economic value of the ancient method of making ink through activities such as Hui Ink Tracing Gold and Huizhou Inkstone Carving.
Furthermore, Grade 7 students also had opportunities to explore the architectural features, folk customs, living environment, and ecological culture of Hui-style villages through activities such as Delving into Hongcun Ancient Village and Hongcun Ancient Village Surveys.
To understand the historical background and techniques of Hui-style private garden skills, students tried the Fish Lamp Tour Village and Hui-style Gardening.
Grade 7 Week Without Walls – Ancient Village Culture Hui-style Aesthetics Service Learning provided the students with a unique and valuable learning experience that combined cultural appreciation, craftsmanship, and creativity. It was an excellent opportunity for the students to engage with the local culture and history and develop important life skills.
The Grade 8 Week Without Walls trip to Xi’an allowed students to learn and explore the city’s historical significance. The visit to the Terracotta Warriors and the chance to dress up in Tang costumes were memorable experiences for all students.
The Silk Road theme is an essential aspect of Chinese history and culture, and we were delighted that our students had the chance to explore it through activities such as museum visits, cycling the ancient city wall, and visiting the traditional bazaar – Grande Tang Hall 大唐不夜城.
The City Wall Cycling and Tang Dynasty Dress-up activities offered Grade 8 students a unique and engaging opportunity to appreciate the beauty and history of Xi’an. The Silk Road-themed museum and night bazaar excursion gave the students a deeper understanding of the cultural exchange between the East and West.
Visiting the excavation site of the Terracotta Warriors is a must-do in Xi’an, and the opportunity to make mini artificial Terracotta Warriors was an excellent way for the students to engage with the site’s history and culture.
The Yongxingfang is a popular place for experiencing Xi’an culture and food. Learning and performing Qin opera and attending a Biangbiang noodle cooking class provided a fun way for students to immerse themselves in the local culture.
Overall, the Grade 8 Week Without Walls trip to Xi’an gave students a unique and valuable learning experience that combined cultural immersion, history, and personal growth. It was an excellent opportunity for students to explore and appreciate the beauty and history of China outside the classroom.
Grade 9 Week Without Walls- Pingyao Old Town
Pingyao’s ancient building structures and traditional social structures provide an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the history and culture of China. Our Grade 9 Week Without Walls trip to Pingyao old town provided a valuable learning experience for students.
Participating in local crafts workshops, such as noodle making, face painting, and paper cutting, promoted skills development and creativity and contributed to employability and sustainable economic growth. These activities allow students to engage with the local community and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese arts.
The Pingyao ancient town scavenger hunt is fun and engaging for students to explore the city and learn about its history and culture. Visiting the Rishengchang Museum, China’s first private bank and the North China First Bodyguard Vehicle gave students a deeper understanding of Pingyao’s history and its role as the Wall Street of China.
The visit to the Wang Family Courtyard was a great opportunity for students to learn about the traditional architecture and lifestyle of wealthy families in ancient China. The workshops in the guesthouse, such as noodle making, face painting, and paper cutting, allow students to engage with local culture and history in a hands-on and interactive way.
The Grade 9 Week Without Walls trip to Pingyao old town provided students with a unique and valuable learning experience that combined cultural immersion, history, and personal growth.
Grade 10 Week Without Walls- Qufu & Tai’an Culture and Community
Grade 10 embarked on their Week Without Walls adventure to the province of Shandong, starting with a visit to Qufu, the hometown of Confucius. Next, students participated in an orienteering challenge at the Confucius Temple and Mansion to locate specific objects and landmarks within the walls. Following dinner and a short reflection time, the most memorable experience for the students was meeting with local residents in a village on the outskirts of Tai’an. They interacted with older residents, learning about life in the village and the changes they had seen. Spending time with the elders gave them a glimpse into their daily lives, and the students appreciated their warmth and good humour.
十年级前往山东省的户外课堂探险之旅。 第一站是孔子的故乡曲阜，先去孔庙和孔府。 在这次访问期间，我们的学生接受了定向挑战，以定位墙壁内的某些物体和地标。 晚饭后短暂的反思时间。
十年级最难忘的一次是在泰安郊外的一个村庄与当地居民见面。 他们与年长的村民互动，询问村里以前的生活，这些年的变化。 与村里的这些老人共度时光，让我们得以一窥他们的日常生活。 他们的热情和幽默深得十年级学生的赞赏。
The following day, the group visited a local kindergarten, where some students donated to the children. After lunch, the students participated in a community service activity where they painted a wall using one of Confucius’s philosophical understandings, showing creative flair and patience. Then, they participated in a Master Chef Competition, working in teams and using local ingredients to create delicious and visually appealing dishes. In the afternoon, they helped local farmers with planting and weeding.
The students then travelled to the Yougbang Base, where they worked in teams to build shelter and tested it upon completion to see if it was sturdy and could withstand a rainstorm. After lunch, they enjoyed kayaking on calm waters. In groups, students created videos to demonstrate their learning from the week through a series of interviews and informational talks. The trip concluded with a visit to the serene and beautiful temple, and the students returned to Beijing, having thoroughly enjoyed themselves and being great ambassadors for CISB.

The Grade 10 Week Without Walls trip to Shandong province offered students a distinctive and beneficial learning experience that combined exposure to diverse cultures, meaningful service opportunities, exciting outdoor adventures, and chances for personal development.
Grade 11 Week Without Walls – Denfeng and Luoyang in Henan
Our Grade 11 students had a memorable trip to Denfeng and Luoyang in Henan. They started with a scavenger hunt at the Shaolin Temple, immersing themselves in the local culture and learning about martial arts. The day at the Shaolin Martial Arts school was particularly memorable, where they had classes about different martial arts and the opportunity to mingle with local students.
They also visited Luotuoya Village and helped a farmer plant sweet potatoes while experiencing the ancient way of repairing walls. This unique experience allowed them to contribute to the local community while learning essential life skills such as teamwork and problem-solving.
我们十一年级的学生在河南登封和洛阳度过了一段难忘的旅程。 他们从少林寺寻宝开始，沉浸在当地文化中，学习武术。 在少林武术学校的那一天特别令人难忘，他们在那里开设了关于不同武术的课程，并有机会与当地学生打成一片。
总体而言，十一 年级登封和洛阳户外课堂之旅为我们的学生提供了宝贵的学习体验，将文化沉浸、社区服务和个人成长相结合。 很高兴学生们在因疫情而暂停后可以重新开始环游中国，并继续在课堂之外学习和成长。
