CISB was founded in 2005 as a State Level Project in partnership with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Education, the Government of Canada, and the New Brunswick, Canada, Department of Education.

CISB is a not-for-profit, co-educational international school, governed by a Board of Directors. It is their role to guide school decision-making to be in the best interests of students, parents, teachers and staff.

CISB is fully licensed as an international school, registered with the Bureau of Education. CISB is fully compliant with all Chinese laws, directives and statutes. CISB is also accredited by the Canadian New Brunswick education department of education to provide their programmes.

CISB is also undergoing an accreditation process with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). The ongoing work with these external organizations ensures rigorous, international standards in all areas, including learning & teaching, governance, teacher recruitment and child safeguarding.
