On a day with weather that could easily be described as sublime, CISB held their annual Terry Fox run for cancer research at Chaoyang Park. With perfectly blue skies and not a cloud in sight, students, parents, family members, CISB staff and friends gathered at Chaoyang Park Equestrian Center to socialize and stretch before participants set off on the winding, picturesque course. At the starting line, only smiles could be seen and excited laughter heard from participants ranging from 3 to 69 years old. Whether they ran, walked or strolled the five-kilometer, distance-optional course, everyone experienced the same sense of positivity and hope that exemplifies the purpose of the run the world over.
Collecting wristbands at checkpoints along the course and refreshments as needed, everyone chose a distance best suited to their capabilities. There were no losers on the day as participation is the mantra of the run that has been held since 1981 in honor of Terry Fox who lost his leg to cancer and began his Marathon of Hope in 1980 in St. John’s Newfoundland to raise funds for cancer awareness and research.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Terry Fox is considered a national hero in Canada and while his run ended in Thunder Bay, Ontario when his cancer spread to his lungs, his legacy lives on with the local heroes like those participating in today’s CISB edition. Donations collected will be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation.
CISB and all associated with our school would like to extend our warmest thanks to Chaoyang Park Equestrian Center for hosting our pre- and post-run activities as well as their donation of 100 energy packs for participants. The center was once the venue of the Equestrian World Cup and served as the perfect location for a perfect day of community spirit dedicated to an inspiring cause.
To all those who made donations, volunteered or participated, CISB as an organization would also like to extend our sincere gratitude and our invitation to join us again in 2025.
