Our PK students are currently exploring the Target Games Unit, developing essential foundational skills such as overhand and underhand throwing, rolling, and kicking. Beyond physical coordination, this unit is designed to strengthen one of the most important early learning dispositions — concentration — the ability to focus and sustain attention.

Lesson Focus: Target Games in PK

The What and the Why of Learning

The skills represent what children are practicing, while the focus on concentration and confidence represents why they are doing it. Starting with larger targets allows children to experience early success, promoting confidence and motivation. As the targets gradually become smaller, activities demand greater focus and precision, helping deepen their concentration.

At the same time, learning to hold a ball, stay on target, and resist the urge, or impulse, to throw aimlessly — supports children in developing impulse control, an essential part of early executive function.

Through purposeful play and thoughtfully designed experiences, our PK learners are cultivating focus, confidence, and self-regulation — key foundations for lifelong learning.
