Earlier in October, seven students from the Grade 12 Wellness Through Physical Education class visited Biohacking Beijing to experience contrast therapy, a recovery method that alternates between extreme heat and cold, such as sauna and ice baths.
This technique is widely recognized for improving circulation, reducing inflammation, enhancing recovery, and building mental resilience.
The cold plunge quickly became the highlight of the trip, and the greatest challenge. At first, many students hesitated as the icy water tested their mental toughness and focus. One student captured the collective feeling perfectly with a shout of
“AAHHHHHHHH!” upon first entering the tub.
The initial discomfort quickly gave way to determination as students focused on breathing and self-control. Impressively, most managed to stay in the icy water for three to seven minutes.
The experience connected classroom concepts to real-world practice, giving students a memorable, hands-on look at recovery science and self-regulation. It was an unforgettable experience that blended science, challenge, and self-discovery, a perfect example of holistic education in action.
