Wide eyes filled with wonder, big broad grins visibly poking up under protective masks, and the scampering of eager little Grade 4 and 5 aged feet were among the exciting sights and sounds at CISB on June 8. Indeed, our teachers and staff were elated to welcome those elementary students back to campus for the first time since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic began.
After completing all the required safety measures upon arrival at school — from temperature checks to stepping on special mats that clean the soles of shoes — the returning Grade 4 and 5 students made their way to CISB’s auditorium for a welcome back presentation. Head of School/Superintendent Mr. Douglas K. Prescott enthusiastically greeted the students during that assembly. He also reminded them of the seriousness of CISB’s safety protocols during the pandemic. “We are extremely pleased to welcome you back after four months,” he said, adding: “Last week we had a chance to welcome back the Middle-High students on June 1, but I would like to wish you all a belated Happy Children’s Day.”
Mr. Prescott went on to add: “Everything we are doing here today is for two reasons: to keep you safe, and to keep us safe. We want to make sure that none of us do anything that would compromise that security, which is why we have new rules and protocols in place as we welcome you back to school.”
That sentiment was seconded by Grade 5 teacher Michael Frazer, who said: “[Grade 4 teacher] Ms. Carter, is excited to see you here, and [BML Department Head] Ms. Muralla is excited to see you here, as am I. Mr. Murray and I even came early yesterday to do some extra preparation, doing everything we can to welcome you back. We need you to do your part as well, which begins with wearing your masks, washing your hands and maintaining social distancing.”
Mr. Prescott also gave the students some details about what they could expect in the classroom. “Some of your teachers are here this morning, so you will have live lessons, while some of your other lessons will be online,” he said of the blended learning approach that CISB has implemented to best serve students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While he acknowledged the challenges that this semester has posed to students, Mr. Prescott was quick to point out the long term benefits of withstanding such difficulties: “I hope that you have enjoyed your time learning in a new model as of late, because it is part of what the future holds for you, that you can learn in many different ways. While we know you’d like to have your teacher in front of you — you love your teachers and TAs, and we love to see you coming to school each day — it is important to realize that, as you get older, technology becomes a very important part of your learning.”
As Mr. Prescott concluded his remarks, he led the students and staff in a school cheer “One, two, three, Go Bobcats!”. A pride was felt about the room as students and staff reconnected!
当Prescott先生讲话结束时,他带领学生和员工加油打气:“One two three, Go Bobcats!”
From there, the Grade 4 and 5 students were given a detailed presentation by MSHS Vice-Principal Mr. Matt Doige about protocols and expectations to keep our Bobcat community secure during this ongoing pandemic. The assembly then concluded with a presentation from our nurse Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU) about maintaining hygiene and other safety measures against the virus.
