We are beyond proud here at the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) to recognize Joyce Z, a Grade 12 student, who has very recently received prestigious scholarship offers from some of the most internationally renowned arts programs:
- Syracuse University
- School of Visual Arts
- California College of the Arts – $100,000
- Pratt Institute – $80,000
- School of the Art Institute of Chicago – $60,000
Joyce’s success is a testament to her hard work, passion, and creativity – qualities nurtured by CISB’s supportive faculty, rigorous curriculum, and multicultural community. We asked her to reflect on her journey thus far, and here is a snippet of what she had to share:
How has CISB shaped your growth as a student and as an individual?
“The IB DP is rigorous, but it challenges students academically and personally – it allowed me to grow and develop as an individual by encouraging discipline and creative thinking. The teachers at CISB, like Mr. Chang and Mr. Harrison, are easygoing and create comfortable classroom environments. They also patiently answered all questions and gave feedback on areas for improvement. This taught me how to accept mistakes, not be discouraged, and continue to improve myself.”
How has CISB’s multicultural environment influenced your perspective?
“At CISB, we are ‘one’ and there is no ‘other.’ The multicultural environment fosters inclusivity… students feel comfortable at school, learn from one another, and appreciate different perspectives.”
What advice would you give to younger students?
“In Grade 6, I found that I loved design and it became important to me to express my creativity and chase my passion. Those who are preparing for art applications, focus on building your portfolio and writing a strong personal statement. Explore the world as much as possible. Be brave. Dream big.”
